Claude envies Dimitri for how easy he has it, having his gender practically handed to him at birth and never having to fight for being seen as who he is. He doesn't know Dimitri is trans, too, and equally resents Claude for the exact same reasons. They project their bitterness onto the monthly inter-college debate competitions, not realising that underneath their rivalry, a lot of mutual pining and attraction awaits.

Dr. Manuela Cassagranda, M.D. was a peerless surgeon at the start of a brilliant career with nowhere to go but up, her bright future star-studded and full of possibility for television deals, celebrity stardom, money, accolades, and suitors lined up around the block. She was going to rake in the big bucks, marry some twenty-years-younger thembo, retire at fifty, and spend the rest of her life sunbathing on her deck while drunk on the finest mixed drinks money could buy.

Now she’s a live-in triage nurse at a kids summer camp, married to her college ex for tax benefits, old enough that she’s embarrassed to print her age on forms, and all she ever drinks is bottom-shelf boxed wine. And if all that weren’t enough, the twentysomething camp counsellors have decided she’s a “trans elder” and think she ought to tell her ex that she might still be in love with him.

At least it can’t get any worse.
